Nalu Andrade, the artisan behind Na Maka Kahiko, embodies Hawaii’s cultural richness. A guardian of tradition, Nalu’s artistry centers on wood carving. His journey began at age six, inspired by the 1978 Hokule’a voyage. As a high school student he assisted in lashing the world renown Hokuleʻa at Pier 40, an experience etching his destiny in woodcraft.
Within the sacred enclave of Hokuleʻa, Nalu crossed paths with luminaries of the Hawaiian cultural renaissance. Keone Nunes emerged as a pivotal mentor, guiding Nalu in carving and hula. The construction of Hawaiʻi Loa deepened Nalu’s expertise, with Wright Bowman Jr. and Gilbert Ane leaving indelible marks on his craft.
In 2015, Nalu established Na Maka Kahiko, deftly weaving tradition and contemporary vision into hand-carved ‘ohe kapala (bamboo stamps) earrings. These creations transcend mere jewelry, bearing the heartbeat of generations that are inspired by timeless designs from nature and nurtured by extensive Bishop Museum research. Na Maka Kahiko offers a treasure trove of artistry, from ‘ohe kapala earrings to hair picks, ‘ohe kapala stamps, bone makau and ko’i pendants, ‘ohe hano ihu, ʻohe pu, hawaiian games, and hūoeoe (roaring kukui nut top). The aforementioned exquisite pieces grace prestigious institutions like the Bishop Museum, Honolulu Art Museum, Hawaiian Mission Houses Historical Site and Archives, among other locales.
Yet, Nalu’s gift extends beyond his artistry; he’s a dedicated teacher imparting wisdom through enlightening workshops. Esteemed institutions have benefitted from his knowledge, like the Punana Leo Schools, the University of Hawaii, Kamehameha Schools, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources. He even spread the essence of aloha to Vancouver, WA, during the “4 Days of Aloha'' festival.
In 2020, Nalu embraced innovation, introducing online workshops that transcend borders, bridging oceans to share his teachings with other cultures worldwide. Through his online store, Nalu’s artistry and wisdom invite all to partake in Hawaiʻi’s timeless traditions.
Nalu Andrade’s journey epitomizes the enduring spirit of Hawaiian culture, bridging the past and the present, and celebrating nature’s beauty. Through Na Maka Kahiko, he continues to shape the vibrant tapestry of Hawaiian heritage, ensuring the ancient whispers of our kūpuna echo vibrantly for generations to come.
